The Bundesliga was founded in 1963 to create a centralized, professional football league in West Germany. Before that, football was played in regional leagues called Oberligen. The first season started in August 1963 with 16 teams. 1. FC Köln won the inaugural title. 1970s – Bayern Munich's Rise: This decade saw Bayern Munich emerge as a dominant force, led by stars like Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller, and Sepp Maier. Bayern won the league three times and also became European champions. Borussia Mönchengladbach was another strong team, winning five titles in the 1970s. 1980s – Competition and Tragedy: Hamburger SV and VfB Stuttgart claimed league titles.
Some of the most valuable original pieces include the club’s certificate of foundation from 1899, the ball from the legendary 1960 European Cup final vs. Real Madrid and, of course, the trophies that Eintracht have won throughout its history. As well as Eintracht Frankfurt, the history of the city of Frankfurt and the county Hessen is also part of the exhibition.
Bayern Munich dominated the league, starting a run of consecutive titles from 2013 onward. Borussia Dortmund under Jürgen Klopp won in 2011 and 2012, playing exciting football. RB Leipzig, backed by Red Bull, emerged as a controversial but competitive club. 2020s – Continued Bayern Dominance, Tight Title Races: Bayern continued their dominance, but Borussia Dortmund, Leipzig, and Bayer Leverkusen challenged them closely. The 2022–23 season ended dramatically, with Bayern clinching the title on the final day due to Dortmund’s draw.
